Rain

Precipitation or thawing snow in the days preceding a paddle will make the flow faster in rivers, cool the temperature and could affect the water clarity. One upside is that shallow sections may be deeper, making them easier to paddle, especially downstream, if not too fast.

When there’s been a fair amount of rain, but not just after a sudden surge, rivers can be good places for a paddle. If you’re suitably protected from the cold, particularly your feet, a crisp winter’s day on rivers can be beautiful and especially good for wildlife watching if the water is clear.

If you’re in a wetsuit rain isn’t necessarily a problem. Would you rather be dry and bored or wet and having a good time? A hat can lessen the effects of rain, hail and sun.

Some days are just plain rainy and dull with it, but on seemingly less pluvial days look out for cumulonimbus clouds heading your way. They resemble the classic fluffy white cumulus clouds, but are taller and/or bigger with darker bases, and sometimes anvil-shaped. The showers they bring tend to be fairly brief, though can be heavier in summer and more prolonged near the sea.

Where cumulonimbus clouds are much bigger, seemingly filling a large section of the sky, and very dark below with ragged bases, they can produce storms. When you see these moving in your direction with grey streaks coming from the base it’s probably time to call it a day.

This is particularly true if lightning ensues. The number of seconds between a flash and the sound of thunder, divided by 3, gives the approximate distance you are from the lightning in km (e.g. 6 seconds for 2km away). It may be time to upgrade from that metal paddle! Most adjustable paddles have metal in the clips, which could act as a lightning conductor and send the electric current through you.
